NovaVision VRT™ Vision Restoration Therapy

Approximately 1.5 million stroke and traumatic brain injury (TBI) victims in the U.S. suffer from major visual field deficits, and that number grows by more than 90,000 new patients each year. Previously these patients went untreated, but now Ophthalmology Associates is offering a vision therapy that treats neurological vision loss.

Ophthalmology Associates has joined leading neurological, eye and rehabilitations centers nationwide in offering NovaVision Vision Restoration Therapy (VRT). VRT is an at-home therapy performed on a an FDA-cleared medical device that can help restore vision lost as a result of stroke or traumatic brain injury, a condition previously considered untreatable. By activating the brain’s proven self-repair capability—called neuroplasticity—VRT enhances remaining vision. Studies show that over 70% of VRT patients experience improvements in their vision and overall quality of life. Improvements may include reading, watching TV, walking, shopping and socializing, as well as increased confidence and independence. (As with all therapies, individual results vary.)

Patients with stroke or TBI typically need time for impaired brain functions to recover, and after most injuries, therapy can help to restore function. VRT is considered a personalized physical therapy program for the brain. As with any rehabilitation program, consistency is vital; repeated exposure to VRT is required to produce results. Improvement is gradual, and for some patients the first improvements can be noticed as early as a few months after starting the vision therapy.

VRT Process

  • Patient calls NovaVision for an initial screening to find out if VRT is appropriate.

  • Patient completes an initial visit and evaluation at Ophthalmology Associates to determine if VRT diagnostic testing is recommended.

  • Diagnostic tests are administered at Ophthalmology Associates and results are used to create a customized vision therapy program.

  • Patient completes daily therapy sessions at home on a VRT medical device for approximately 6-7 months.

  • Therapy results are sent monthly to NovaVision for evaluation and updating to optimize progress.

  • After completing 6-7 months VRT, additional therapy may be recommended.
