Frequently Asked Questions
How can I tell
if this procedure will work for me?
If you wear
glasses all the time for your distance vision, you might be a
good candidate. A complete exam by our LASIK surgeon, Dr.
Robert Warren, is necessary to make sure your eyes are
normal and healthy.
What is the
success rate of LASIK?
More than 96% of
laser vision treatments have resulted in at least 20/40 vision
without correction in national clinical trials. This means
that those patients no longer need to wear glasses or contacts
to pass a driving test or to perform most everyday functions.
Has anyone
gone blind from this procedure?
There have been
no reported cases of blindness in the United States.
What
restrictions or limitations will I have after the procedure?
Most patients go
back to work and resume all of their normal activities the
next day following the laser vision correction. The only
restriction is no swimming for 3 weeks.
What about
pain? Does LASIK hurt?
NO. The
anesthetic eye drops make the procedure painless. You may
experience a slight gritty or scratchy sensation in your eyes.
Medication will be prescribed if needed to make you more
comfortable.
Will I have to
wear glasses after this procedure?
There is a good
possibility that you will not need to wear glasses for your
distance vision. However, if you are over 40, you will
probably have to wear glasses for your close or reading
vision. This is called presbyopia, which is a normal aging
process. There is no surgery to correct the need for reading
glasses after the age of 40.
How soon after
LASIK will I see well?
In most cases, you
should notice an immediate improvement. Visual recovery
varies for each person, but it is usually stable within three
months. The speed at which your vision improves is due to
individual rates of healing
and degrees of nearsightedness, farsightedness and
astigmatism.
